THE MBAThe Master Builders and Allied Industries Association (East Cape) celebrates 100 years of service to members and the building industry. The MBA is a non profit, non political, employers association which represents the rights and interests of 1000 employer members throughout the entire Southern and Eastern Cape, including the East London/Border and former Ciskei, Transkei regions. The MBA encompasses small to large established contractor members in all sectors of the building industry including plumbing, electrical, painting, glazing, waterproofing, ceiling, flooring, tiling and carpentry contractors as well as associate members supplying materials, goods, plant and equipment or professional services. The MBA is a corporate member of the Building Industries Federation of South Africa (MBSA) and represents its members interests on this national body.
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MBA/BIACENTENARY 1898 - 1998The first inaugural meeting of master builders in Port Elizabeth was held on 8 January 1898 at 08:00 on a Saturday evening. The meeting was called by Mr Jass Williams by circular and advertisement to master builders and contractors "for the purpose of discussing the advisability of establishing a Master Builders' and Contractors' Association in this town" (Port Elizabeth). That first meeting was attended by some sixteen contractors and Mr L Mackay was unanimously elected to the chair. Mr Williams became the Association's first secretary. A number of meetings were held in that year which laid the foundations of the Association. A committee of seven was elected and, having made contact with the Cape Town Association, a set of rules was drafted and accepted by the Association on Saturday, 22 July 1898. Activity wained during the years 1900 through to 1903 and no formal record of meetings can be found for that time. On 24 June 1903 the Association met under the chairmanship of Mr Davey and unanimously elected Mr William Whyte as its secretary. Mr Grant was President at the time and was also appointed treasurer. One of the motions of that meeting on 24 June 1903 was that on the recommendation of Mr Davey the secretary "communicate with the various Master Builders' Associations throughout South Africa in order to obtain their views with regard to Federation". On 26 August 1903 the general meeting of the Association resolved that the secretary "obtain from the secretary of the Provincial Hospital all the necessary information regarding the cost and upkeep of a bed in hospital to be at the disposal of tradesmen employed by the members of the Association who might receive injuries while employed at their work". Could this have been the start of some form of medical aid for the building industry? During the remainder of 1903 such issues as the rules of the Association, the formation of a Federation and admission of members were discussed. During 1904 Messrs Grant and Duncan were sent to Durban to discuss the formation of a Federation which representatives from Pietermaritzburg, Kimberley and East London attended. The Federation was therefore founded on 23 March 1904 and the first congress was held in Port Elizabeth in May 1905. Port Elizabeth Master Builders' Association was represented by Messrs Davey, Grant, Rochelle and Duncan. The Association continued from strength to strength and we are pleased to say that the Ninety Third Annual Congress of the Building Industries Federation of South Africa will be held in Port Elizabeth in September 1998. During 1982 the Association amalgamated with the Master Builders' Associations of East London , Southern Cape, Queenstown, King William's Town and Grahamstown to form the Master Builders' and Allied Trades Association, East Cape. The Association continued to operate under this name until May 1987 when, whilst maintaining its registration as the MBA, it began operating as the Building Industries Association, East Cape (BIA). On the eve of its Centenary and with the advent of the new Labour Relations Act the Association resolved to revert back to its former name with one slight variation namely, the East Cape Master Builders' and Allied Industries Association (East Cape MBA). The Association currently operates on a very wide scale with regular meetings at its three main branches namely, Port Elizabeth, East London and Southern Cape. Meetings are also held regularly in Grahamstown, Port Alfred, Queenstown, Jeffreys Bay and annually in most of the country towns within the Association's area of jurisdiction. The Association operates three offices at the Branches which are manned full time by Association staff. The Association currently has a staff component of twelve and provides a wide range of services to members some of which are:
