Substance abuse in the workplace

Substance abuse on construction sites poses a major safety risk, and under South African law both the client and the principal contractor carry explicit duties regarding the health and safety standards on their projects. 

The purpose of this Tech Talk is to:

• Make attendees aware of the seriousness of alcohol and drug abuse on construction sites;
• The importance of a substance abuse policy;
• The difference between misconduct and incapacity;
• The consequences of not complying with the substance abuse policy, which could include dismissal for a first offender.
• The legal limits according to South African law.
